We so appreciate those who give time, energy and enthusiasm to the Museum. In addition to your time, we hope you will join as a member at a special $35 level. Every membership helps us to keep the doors open and have the ability to mount great exhibitions. If you are unable to pay the membership fee, please let us know.

As a special thank you for volunteering, after 20 hours you will receive a catalog from one of the Museum's exhibitions.

We need volunteers in visitor services, the gift shop, and gallery guide. There is also need for volunteers to help with receptions and other events. We are delighted that you are considering volunteering at the Museum. We need inspired, passionate people to help create a memorable visitor experience.

Volunteer Gallery Docent (Adult Tours / Higher Education Weekdays)

The Gallery Docent provides engaging informative museum tours to senior groups and adults of diverse backgrounds. Gallery Docents serve as museum liaisons providing a rich experience for our visitors and are trained to be knowledgeable in the museum’s collection and contemporary fiber arts. 

Volunteer Gallery Docent (Adult Tours) duties:

  • Support the museum's mission goals, policies and procedures
  • Provide information about museum history and mission statement
  • Provide information about current and future exhibits
  • Arrive 20 minutes prior to scheduled tour
  • Provide an enthusiastic, warm welcome to visitors
  • Check in group prior to tour
  • Conduct tour of museum exhibition(s)
  • Facilitate or assist with group activities
  • Participate in any required training, Curator talks and lectures
  • Must be available between 12:00pm and 2:30pm Wednesday, Thursday or Friday
  • Weekend Gallery Docents must be available between 11:00am - 1:30pm or 2:00pm - 4:00pm

Requirements:

  • Must be able to project voice in front of large groups
  • Able to maintain composure and patience during stressful situations
  • Must be able to project an enthusiastic attitude
  • Must be reliable and able to commit to scheduled times
  • Fiber Art, Studio Art, Art History or Education background a plus
  • Familiarity with Senior groups or Quilting organizations a plus


Weekend Gallery Guides (Public Tours)

The Weekend Gallery Guide will serve as a Docent during scheduled public tours. In the event that there are no tours scheduled the Gallery Guide will walk the galleries and assist visitors with any questions they may have about the exhibitions.

Weekend Gallery Guide duties:

  • Support the museum's mission goals, policies and procedures
  • Provide information about museum history and mission statement
  • Provide information about current and future exhibits
  • Walk through galleries, answer visitor questions
  • Check in group prior to pre-scheduled tours
  • Conduct public tours of museum exhibition(s)
  • Facilitate or assist with group activities
  • Participate in any required training, Curator talks and lectures

Requirements:

  • Must enjoy engaging in conversation
  • Comfortable approaching visitors
  • An interest in Contemporary Fiber Art
  • Fiber Art, Studio Art, Art History or Education background a plus
  • Willingness to learn public speaking techniques and strategies
  • Be punctual and commit to scheduled times
  • Comfortable speaking to large groups
  • Weekend Gallery Docents must be available between 11:00am - 1:30pm or 2:00pm - 4:00pm

LET'S TALK FIBER / VOLUNTEER DOCENT (SCHOOL TOURS K-12)

Let’s Talk Fiber / Docents at the San Jose Museum of Quilts & Textiles conduct guided tours to school groups of diverse backgrounds. Docents may also provide other participatory experiences such as hands on art activities, observational drawing exercises and writing activities in the gallery. Through these experiences Docents will aid students in making personal connections with the museum’s collection and exhibitions while expanding their learning experience.

Let's Talk Fiber Volunteer Docent (School Tours K-12) duties:

  • Support the museum's mission goals, policies and procedures
  • Provide information about museum history and mission statement
  • Provide information about current and future exhibits
  • Arrive 20 minutes prior to scheduled tour
  • Provide an enthusiastic, warm welcome to school groups
  • Check in teachers prior to pre-scheduled tour
  • Provide students with museum rules and etiquette
  • Engage students through open dialogue, VTS & promote inquiry-based learning
  • Conduct 45 minute tour of museum exhibition(s) and assist with hands-on activity as needed
  • Participate in any required training, Curator talks and lectures
  • Must be available between 12:00pm and 2:30pm Wednesday, Thursday or Friday

Requirements:

  • Must enjoy working with kids of varying ages
  • Comfortable working with large school groups
  • Must be able to project voice in front of large groups
  • Able to maintain composure and patience during stressful situations
  • Must be able to project an enthusiastic attitude
  • Must be reliable and able to commit to scheduled times
  • Fiber Art, Studio Art, Art History or Education background a plus
  • Familiarity with Santa Clara County School systems a plus

Art Experience Volunteer (School Tours K-12)

Art Experience Volunteers lead school groups in an engaging hands on fiber based art activity. The museum provides tours to school groups throughout the bay area. We provide an engaging hands on museum experience that includes a 45 minute docent guided tour and a 45 minute hands on art activity. 

Art Experience Volunteer duties:

  • Support the museum's mission goals, policies and procedures
  • Arrive 20 minutes prior to scheduled tour
  • Assist Docent if needed during tour with hands-on activities
  • Assist and provide instruction to students during 45 minute art activity
  • Encourage parents and chaperones to participate
  • Studio set-up / take-down
  • Material prep
  • Assist with special event activities as needed
  • Participate in any required training, Curator talks and lectures

Requirements:

  • Must enjoy working with kids of varying ages
  • Comfortable working with large school groups
  • Able to maintain composure and patience during stressful situations
  • Able to lift 25 lbs.
  • Must be energetic and able to move at a fast pace when needed
  • Must be reliable and able to commit to scheduled times
  • Fiber  Art or Studio Art background a plus
  • Must be available between 12:00pm and 2:30pm Wednesday, Thursday or Friday
