Luana Rubin Fiber Talk and Q& A: “International Quilt Trends." July 30, 2-3 PM

Luana Rubin w is the co-owner of, and has worked as a designer in the quilt, textile and garment industries since 1980. Take a trip around the world with over 200 quilt images featuring trends in contemporary quilt-making. See how quilters in different countries use their own culture as inspiration for unique works of art, and how the minimalism of Modern Quilting is progressing as a design trend. Color trends and techniques will be discussed, in this review of quilt art trends over the last year. 
Luana is also licensed designer for Robert Kaufman Fabrics, was a Bernina Fashion Show designer, and is a Bernina Ambassador.

A bit more about Luana Rubin:
Luana won the Michael Kile Award in 2008 – a lifetime achievement award from the quilting industry. She is also a chairholder in Color Marketing Group, the premier international color forecasting association. An avid photographer, Luana leads tours around the world, and has traveled to 40 countries. eQuilter donates 2% of sales to charity, and they have raised $1.4 million for a variety of organizations. Over 12,000 donated comfort quilts have been received at eQuilter, and distributed around the world for disaster relief, orphans, and medical patients. 

Her 2016 quilt “Rocky Mountain Poison” was exhibited at the United Nations in Geneva Switzerland, and an Embassy exhibit in Rome. Her Apollo Astronaut-themed quilt was chosen to be exhibited at the Johnson Space Center /NASA in early 2017. Her portrait quilt of Rosalynn Carter will be in the “HerStory” exhibit later this year.

Drawing Inspiration through Textiles with Heather Deyling            Saturday, August 19, 11:30 am to 2 pm

Participants are welcome to bring their own paper and drawing materials if desired.                                                           Workshop type: Textile Collage and Drawing

Participants will use a variety of textiles as inspiration to create a textile collage. With the guidance of the instructor, Heather Deyling, participants will learn to translate their designs into drawings while exploring various techniques with a variety of drawing materials. Students will have the opportunity to create a design on fabric in response to their collage compositions. The workshop will help students conquer fears about drawing and make the practice of drawing more accessible and enjoyable.

About the Artist:                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                       Heather Deyling is an artist and educator currently teaching through Savannah College of Art and Design. Her current work, the "Invented Hybrids" series, includes drawing, fiber based sculpture and installation. Her studio practice is driven by research and observation of natural forms, such as succulents, fungi, and marine invertebrates. She earned her MFA in painting and drawing from Tyler School of Art at Temple University and a BFA from Kent State University. Deyling has participated in a number of group and solo exhibitions across the United States.
