Founded in 2016, the Social Justice Sewing Academy is a critical education program that bridges artistic expression with activism. By using textile art as a vehicle for personal transformation and community cohesion SJSA empowers participants to become agents of social change. In SJSA workshops, participants design 15x15 inch quilt squares that reflect their anger, sadness or passion about the social justice issue of their choice. Using art as an organized methodology, we promote a model that actively engages in conversations with our surrounding community through the lens of contemporary art. Curious about backstitch, running stitch, chain stitch and those textured, fancy-looking knots - French knots and bullion knots? Inspired by 18th-century needlework samplers, this workshop explores learning these fun, basic embroidery stitches through starting a stitch-and-repeat design to take home. While practicing your stitches, you’re also creating an art piece drawn in thread. Use one of the modern needlework samplers/artwork on hand designed by the artist featuring endangered plants and their stories, or
create a sampler/artwork all your own.
